INTRODUCTION
Counseling is often the first and usually one of the best weapons we have against a whole range of psychological issues like depression, grief and anxiety.
A counselor is someone who specializes and is qualified to help others understand their issues and assist them in finding the best solutions to their problems.
Often people find solace in talking to friends or family, but for many people this can actually be a barrier to openly and honestly discussing your issues – many people feel more comfortable talking to a trained professional who is essentially a stranger and who can therefore listen to you without judgement.
Nearly everyone faces challenges and difficulties in their life at some time. But sometimes they can be overwhelming and we feel like we are helpless. Stress over a job, anxiety caused by uncertainty over the future, loss because of bereavement, problems over addiction or difficulties in a relationship are just some of the reasons why people feel they can benefit by talking to a professional Counselor or Psychotherapist.
Counselors are not miracle workers or magician, we follows principles to work with you to solve your problems. It’s strange how we normally make counseling our last resort, you should see an expert as soon as you noticed that something is going wrong.
1. Counselors helps you to understand yourself better, they bring your notice to those traits that you might not notice about yourself. They are dedicated to giving you good guidance and advice on how to make your troubling issues better so that you can live happier b b
2. Counselors help you to bring out the repressed materials, some things that are buried in you that is leading to your current crises or behavior e.g. bitterness, someone could hate sex bc she has developed phobia as a result of rape or past negative sexual experiences. These repressed materials always find a way to come back to haunt you later if not confronted.
3. Counselor help you see things in another or new perspective.
Saying them to another person also makes you consider what their view is, meaning you can gain new ways of thinking about your problems, simply by letting them out3. Counselors listen to you and not command or control you
4. Counselor does not condemn or impose their believes on you. They help you to weigh all options so you can make the right decision for yourself. When you make your choice after talking to a counselor, it means you already understand the consequences of your action. Counselors are not judgmental, they accept you the way you are.
5. Counselors gives expert assistance; Counselor is not your pastor, your relative or friends who give you their opinion from their head or out of experience, even though experience counts, counselors understand that every situation is unique on its own. For example in grief counseling, its believed that loss is universal but grief is unique. There’s no abracadabra or magic in counseling, the counselor just help you to solve the puzzles to find your peace.
6. Talking to a counselor helps you to confront your feelings: Today we’re busier than we’ve ever been in the past, as our attention is pulled in every way possible from the moment we wake up until the moment we fall asleep. This means we can rarely afford time to sit and process feelings of guilt, remorse, grief or sadness. Counseling or talking therapy means you simply dedicate some time to facing or confronting your issues. You know you have paid for this, your time and money is at stake, this is why people need to understand that paying for therapy is also therapeutic in nature.
7. Counselors gives room for privacy, it’s an opportunity to say things u might not be able to say to your partner because counsel IRS takes time to speak to each person alone
8. Counselors are objective party, they probably can see your problem in another perspective. When couples are having difficulties, pains and anger can overshadow their reasoning and they will stop thinking objectively
9. Counselors help you feel less alone with your problem: We all need a shoulder to lean on and no man is an island. In a world where everyone is busy and community and family life are gradually disappearing, its easy to be left alone in one issue or problem. When you share with a professional counselor, who is a complete stranger, who doesn’t know you and won’t judge you, can give you the freedom to talk about things you wouldn’t normally admit to your friends and family.
10. Improve Your Physical Well-being: Often in this field, all of the focus is on the mental side of things, but as physical beings, our physiology and overall health and well being plays into the equation too. Some such benefits people get as a result of counseling can be more energy, sounder sleep, and a better appetite. This often has a knock-on effect, making people more active, which can elevate feelings of positivity. The other side of this coin is the simple benefit of spending time in close proximity to other people which, especially for those feeling lonely, can have a hugely comforting effect.
11. Counseling helps you to make the right decision for yourself
12. Counseling might save your money or even your life in the long run. There have been some studies that show that many physical ailments are ameliorated when someone engages in therapy. When people do not express feelings but swallow them and keep them buried and out of conscious awareness, one’s body often reacts. It acts as a barometer that reads: danger! Something is amiss and needs attention. Somatizing via stomach aches, headaches, sleeping problems, and ulcers are just some of the ways our body reacts to stress and psychic pain.
WHEN SHOULD YOU SEE A COUNSELOR
1.The right time to see a counselor is when you feel you cannot solve your problem on your own or whenever you feel you need professional input, you need to act fast or your insecurity will make u to change your mind, ignoring your cry for attention will make your situation worse and leave you more frustrated.
2. When you sense some danger signs in your relationship and marriage
3. When you need 100 percent confidentiality
4. When you need someone to talk to or a shoulder to lean on
5. When you want to understand the principles of keeping a healthy relationship and marriage
6. when you want to improve the life of your loved ones, introduce them to a counselor ( talk about invitations here eg valentine bookings, limited space)
